Learning the Rules of Blackjack

Blackjack is an extremely popular casino card game that dates back hundreds of years. While there are dozens of different types of blackjack games ranging from Spanish 21, Atlantic City Blackjack and Bonus Blackjack, the basic rules of these games are the same.

Whether you are heading to one of the casino hotspots like Vegas or Atlantic City, or just looking to play a friendly game of Blackjack with friends, here’s a look at some of the basic rules of Blackjack.

Closest to 21

The object of the game of Blackjack is to get as close to 21 as possible without going over. While that might sound simple, you are also competing against the dealer who is “playing” along. If the dealer is closer to 21 than you are and doesn’t go over 21, you will lose.

How are Aces Played?

In card games, aces can go two ways. They can either be considered high and used as an 11 or low and used as a one. In most variations of Blackjack, you have the choice to use the ace whichever way you wish. However, in some variations of Blackjack you have to use the ace as high or low and don’t have the ability to choose.

What is Insurance?

Some variations will allow you to purchase what is called insurance if the dealer has the possibility of getting a blackjack, an ace and face card or 10, on the first hand. The insurance will give you your bet back if the dealer gets a blackjack, but if the dealer does not then the money is lost.

If these rules have you yearning to play a game of Blackjack, you can find a local casino that offers a variation of Blackjack by searching the Canada 411 or you can play a pick-up game with friends and family members.

There is something about going to a casino and placing a bet. Regardless of the outcome there is a rush and a sense of danger to playing. But what is gambling at its finest? Some will say that the more money you put on a table, the fancier you dress, or even the ritzier casino palace you visit will make it the finest of them all. Fortunately for those of us who only have a few dollars to spend there is a better way to play poker.

  • Before you play poker at all it might be a good experience to play some Vegas style games at an online casino. These sites will give you good low cost practice for whatever you choose for your one of a kind gambling adventure. Some sites will even give gambling tips for beginners. Sites like 888 Casino can give a great feel for what a table will be like when you are actually sitting down next to the dealer.
  • Once you are ready to play for keeps, try inviting a few friends to a poker night. Sometimes it is not necessary to have a full on casino to have a great game of blackjack.
  • Once you have had enough practice and fun with the friends take a few buddies to Vegas (or its nearest equivalent) and make sure to have a little fun.
  • While in the casino play at different tables and different games. Make sure you get to see all of the things that the casino has to offer including the buffet. In the end, gambling at its finest has to do with the people you gamble with.

Today, many varieties of poker can be found in casinos and on online casinos. Where did it all start thought? The game of poker has a long history, although not as you might think of it today.

There are several schools of thought on how poker orginated. Some poker historians can trace the development of poker all the way back to some influence by several games such as the Persian As Nas, the French Poque, the German Pochen, and finally a Spanish game called Primero. These early influences included several characteristics which hold true to poker today and make it unique from other card games, such as betting, some form of bluffing, and a ranking to the hands played in the game.

Later, some version of these games, in particular the French Poque, would be brought to the Americas where poker made even further developments. The use of a 52 card deck, and three specific games within the area of poker became predominate. These games, still the most popular games in poker, are Texas Hold’em, 7 Card Stud, and 5 Card Draw.

Further developments in poker include new options for hands which were introduced at various times between 1850 and 1925, which include the flush, draw, stud poker, straight, wild card, low-ball, and split-pot poker. These introductions would change the way the game played as well as the hierarchy of hands within the game.

Finally, poker would further development with the introduction of tournament play in the 1970s, and the first online poker games in online casinos in 1998.

Overall, poker has changed dramatically since those first versions of the game. One thing remains the same, the basic tenets of the game have remained the same as this game stormed America up the Mississippi River and spread West with the expanding new country.

The Slow Growth of Addiction

Plenty of people like to hit the local gambling establishment every so often and blow off some steam. After a challenging and frustrating week of work, it can be extremely relaxing to simply get into the zen exercise of repeatedly pulling a handle, or making stress-free conversations involving the words “hit me.” However, just as it’s possible to get too much of any good thing, it’s also possible to get too much gambling and end up having a problem.

While it can start out simply as a way to relieve some stress, a gambling addiction can start to develop after awhile. While the signs might start out subtly at first, they can quickly become quite apparent to people around you. When you keep wanting to play one more game, it starts to get obvious that you need to get some help and find a new hobby. While just about any kind of hobby can ultimately turn self-destructive, gambling is among the worst because its effects aren’t immediately obvious like with most drugs. The effects can be devastating, though.

Consider what can happen when you become addicted to gambling. You start to spend longer and longer at the casino, and more and more of your week becomes taken up with anticipating the euphoria of first walking into the casino. When you start to anticipate your first bet with the same eagerness a teenage guy tends to associate with getting to feel up a girl he’s hot for, that’s when the addiction has really taken hold over your life. It can easily break up your most important relationships and bankrupt you all at the same time.

Shifting the Addiction to Something Healthier

Some people are naturally inclined to become addicted to things. It’s encoded into the human genome that many people who are addicted will have kids, and pass on that inclination. This is why the potential addict population is quite high in spite of its dangers. While the fact is that many addictions are fairly harmless, often it takes a proactive effort to keep someone from developing a truly nasty habit that ends up ruling their life.

For one thing, a gambling addiction can be a serious issue to overcome for someone. While it has been proven that quitting most kinds of addictions cold turkey almost never works, it has been proven that the tendency to become addicted to something an be controlled through becoming addicted to something relatively healthy. While most people would agree that an addiction like smoking isn’t especially healthy, an equally strong addiction to chewing gum is nowhere near as potentially harmful to a person’s health. This is why a lot of addictions should be avoided, and any effort to alter the addictive behavior should be encouraged.

For instance, a gambling addiction can be altered into something less harmful but equally stimulating, such as an addiction to exercise. While there is always the potential to be hurt by any kind of compulsive activity, being addicted to exercise generally just means a person gets extremely fit and needs less medical care over time. While a gambling addiction rarely kills anyone, it is often a contributing cause of bankruptcy. When a person changes their addictive patterns to something more beneficial to them, they can live far better.
