Today, many varieties of poker can be found in casinos and on online casinos. Where did it all start thought? The game of poker has a long history, although not as you might think of it today.

There are several schools of thought on how poker orginated. Some poker historians can trace the development of poker all the way back to some influence by several games such as the Persian As Nas, the French Poque, the German Pochen, and finally a Spanish game called Primero. These early influences included several characteristics which hold true to poker today and make it unique from other card games, such as betting, some form of bluffing, and a ranking to the hands played in the game.

Later, some version of these games, in particular the French Poque, would be brought to the Americas where poker made even further developments. The use of a 52 card deck, and three specific games within the area of poker became predominate. These games, still the most popular games in poker, are Texas Hold’em, 7 Card Stud, and 5 Card Draw.

Further developments in poker include new options for hands which were introduced at various times between 1850 and 1925, which include the flush, draw, stud poker, straight, wild card, low-ball, and split-pot poker. These introductions would change the way the game played as well as the hierarchy of hands within the game.

Finally, poker would further development with the introduction of tournament play in the 1970s, and the first online poker games in online casinos in 1998.

Overall, poker has changed dramatically since those first versions of the game. One thing remains the same, the basic tenets of the game have remained the same as this game stormed America up the Mississippi River and spread West with the expanding new country.

Do you like to play poker? These days, you can play a lot of different poker games online. But is it the same as having a group of friends over for poker night? If you still prefer to play the old fashioned way, set up a place to do it in your home, where you can invite your friends over for a night of fun, games, and food.

When setting up your poker night, the first thing you’ll need is a proper table. You can look online for websites that sell poker tables at prices you can afford. You’ll find a wide range of tables to choose from, even some that can double as a dining room table, making set-up a breeze on poker night. Add a smaller table off to the side for snacks and drinks, and provide comfortable chairs for everyone sitting around the table.

Now, what about the game itself? If you’ve never played poker, you’ll need to learn. You and your friends can find lessons online to show you how to play the game. Lessons include full rules, what each hand looks like, and what hand beats what. You can even learn how to play different styles of poker, including Texas Hold’em and 7 Card Stud. While learning to play the game, you might also want to take advantage of an online calculator that shows you whose hand beats whose.

If you have played the game before, you won’t need anything but the cards, poker chips, and some snacks. Instead of the usual chips and dip, try something more exciting, like pizza, egg rolls, or buffalo chicken wings.

Can you win on a Slot Machine?

A lot of people are of the impression that they can simply play their system on a slot machine and win the jackpot within a few hours. This idea tends to come with a heavy financial price, as well as a potentially serious gambling problem. Since no one wants to admit to being wrong and feel stupid, it can be all too easy to simply slip into a state where “a little longer” dominates one’s thoughts.

While the addict’s mindset can be scary to genuinely ponder, it can be all too easy to become obsessed with winning if it doesn’t happen quickly. While it is technically possible to win if you just pull the handle enough times, the likelihood is your winnings will be tiny compared to what you end up putting into the machine. In a lot of cases, working a minimum wage job would do more for you than attempting to make your living through using a slot machine. The law of diminishing returns is in full effect here, unfortunately.

While you may end up winning due to a fairly loose policy with regard to the slots, your odds of winning are not much better than winning at any other game of chance. There is no strategy in a slot machine. You just turn yourself into an automaton whose only purpose in life is to continue to pull that lever and await the expected reward. In an experiment conducted long ago, lab mice did essentially the same thing for extended periods. You might take the fact that the mice died of starvation to heart and learn a life-saving lesson.

How Long is too Long?

There is a tendency among the addiction community to consider a person to either be an addict or completely non-addicted to something. As a general rule, most addiction’s preach that one has to completely abstain from their vice of choice to be considered away from it. They recognize no gray area, because in most cases there is a slippery slope one falls down after that first indulgence. Naturally, every addict is unique, and addiction isn’t always the case.

While the stages of addiction are well documented with regard to drug addicts, gambling addiction is a lot more of a gray area. First off, a drug addict’s addiction tends to be more physically visible to someone on the outside. A gambling addict on the other hand tends to have few to no physical symptoms. The symptoms of a gambling addiction tend to be far more subtle than with other things. So how long does one need to gamble before it becomes a problem? How long must one anticipate the rush of their latest fix before it becomes obvious that they can’t stop?

As a general rule, anything craved more than once in awhile has some addictive properties about it. While a gambling addict will probably not shake or itch like a cocaine addict will, they will tend to become more nervous and jittery if kept away from their vice. If a person feels as if they “need” to go gambling at least every so often, that is the first major sign of a problem developing. In a lot of cases, steering them to a less potentially harmful hobby can derail that train.
