Learning the Rules of Blackjack

Blackjack is an extremely popular casino card game that dates back hundreds of years. While there are dozens of different types of blackjack games ranging from Spanish 21, Atlantic City Blackjack and Bonus Blackjack, the basic rules of these games are the same.

Whether you are heading to one of the casino hotspots like Vegas or Atlantic City, or just looking to play a friendly game of Blackjack with friends, here’s a look at some of the basic rules of Blackjack.

Closest to 21

The object of the game of Blackjack is to get as close to 21 as possible without going over. While that might sound simple, you are also competing against the dealer who is “playing” along. If the dealer is closer to 21 than you are and doesn’t go over 21, you will lose.

How are Aces Played?

In card games, aces can go two ways. They can either be considered high and used as an 11 or low and used as a one. In most variations of Blackjack, you have the choice to use the ace whichever way you wish. However, in some variations of Blackjack you have to use the ace as high or low and don’t have the ability to choose.

What is Insurance?

Some variations will allow you to purchase what is called insurance if the dealer has the possibility of getting a blackjack, an ace and face card or 10, on the first hand. The insurance will give you your bet back if the dealer gets a blackjack, but if the dealer does not then the money is lost.

If these rules have you yearning to play a game of Blackjack, you can find a local casino that offers a variation of Blackjack by searching the Canada 411 or you can play a pick-up game with friends and family members.
